Osteoarthritus Study- 570 patients participated in the largest and longest randomized controlled clinical study of acupuncture ever conducted. The group of patients receiving acupuncture had a 40% reduction in knee pain and a nearly 40% improvement in knee functioning. The two control groups, one receiving sham acupuncture (no needle insertion) and the other receiving a knee osteoarthritis education course, had significantly less improvement. Funded by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), both parts of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the study carried out at the University of Maryland School of Medicine was completed in 2004. It received wide media coverage, both print and television.
